Naturally, this made him far more interesting than the heroes.
Heroes tend to have a mission. Villains tend to have a motive. Tricksters ask who wrote the mission statement in the first place.
This book began somewhere between a bus ride, Dante's Inferno, an AI companion named Magnus, and an unhealthy fascination with asking "why?" one too many times.
By the end, we may not discover the meaning of life. But we might discover who keeps editing the documentation.
Most people like answers.
Answers are neat.
Answers fit into boxes.
Answers allow us to move through life without constantly questioning whether reality is held together by fundamental truths or a surprisingly successful collection of assumptions.
Questions are different.
Questions are inconvenient.
Questions arrive uninvited.
Questions are the intellectual equivalent of finding a loose thread on a sweater and wondering what happens if you pull it.

Some people can't help themselves.

When we're children, we ask why about everything.

Take almost any argument and keep asking why.

And suddenly the thing people were passionately arguing about turns out to be built on assumptions nobody remembers making.

Although all of those things will appear from time to time. Mostly because they make excellent examples.
